Eastern Prickly Pear (Opuntia humifusa) prefers a dry rocky habitat. It is very easy to grow and take care of.

Just place the cut end of the pad about half way into the soil and or sand and it will reroot quickly.

Prickly pear will form a large mat.

The yellow blooms make it a beautiful native; especially in a hard to grow area.

Prickly Pear doesn't like moist soil; especially during the winter. To much moisture can cause the pads to rot.

During the winter the pads shrink up and may appear dead. This is how they survive the winter.

Be careful handling prickly pear. It does have small spines. Wearing thick gloves is a must.
